Fleas Please Leave!

flea exterminationI have lived my whole life in Edmonds, Wash. I love this area and wouldn’t care to move anywhere else. This last summer was especially long and hot for the Pacific Northwest region. For the first time in my life I noticed there were bugs in my home.

This wasn’t just a few fruit flies or a moth, but countless tiny dark-colored bugs in my carpet and in my furniture. I finally figured out that the bugs were fleas. At first I was sickened by the apparent infestation. Soon, though, I realized I needed to get rid of these pests. I called the Edmonds exterminator and someone came out the next day. After a few days I didn’t see anymore bugs.

Autumn Pests that Plague Issaquah

Issaquah pest controlEach city has its own unique set of pests and problems, and Issaquah is no exception. While fall is not the most dangerous time for pests (because of the impending winter cold), Issaquah pest control is still needed for some of these autumn irritators.

-Grubworms: Most active in spring and fall, grubworms are particularly troublesome for places where the freeze doesn’t set in until December. They actually survive through the winter, so be aware that grubworms need to be addressed in every season.

-Fall Armyworms: Mostly interested in eating leaves, these worms are most active from September until the first frost. They feed at night, so their presence usually isn’t known until it’s too late.

-Sod Webworms: Another yearlong pest, sod webworms are a headache mainly because they are so small, so most people don’t spot them until damage has been done. Then, to the surprise of the homeowner, they emerge as moths in the summer. Unfortunately, most means to kill sod webworms also kill other non-pests such as butterflies. The best way to defend against this pest is by keeping your lawn clear of leaves, mulch, or grass clippings.

Can Termites Eat Concrete?

wood eating termite

There has been some talk about termites developing the ability to eat concrete.  Termites like a diet of dead plant material.  Wood is one of the staple dietary choices of the termite.  Termites can process this dead material and convert it into enough nutrients to sustain them.

Concrete, however, is usually made out of granite or limestone, sand, water, and other chemicals.  There is nothing in this mixture that termites can use to sustain them.  Just ask a Seattle pest exterminator if you want to get the facts about termites in your area.

Termites are classified under the taxonomic family Isoptera.  They are a hive-minded species that have something that scientists call Swarm Intelligence.  This means that there is no centralized organization for any of them.  They operate simply out of a instinct for social needs.

Termite colonies can number from the hundreds to the millions.  Unlike bee colonies that have one queen that gives birth to the next generation, termite colonies can have several queens when there is enough food to support a population.  Eastside Exterminators are knowledgeable on termites and they can help when you are in need.
